Smoothies and Scones

We’ve been on a smoothie kick lately.  The boys eat ‘em up, and have just as much fun making them.  I’ve even experimented with adding a little flax seed meal.  Can’t tell the difference from a few berry seeds.

The boys prefer to drink all their drinks in fancy glasses.  It would be great if I could find some plastic stemware.

We tried homemade scones last week.  I made blueberry-peach.  Rob is a scone connoisseir.  He said they weren’t too bad.  I’m thinking a little more sugar and butter next time to make them sweeter and flakier.  I did add that secret ingredient: love.  Can you see it?

We’ve been so busy playing and working outside.  Noah and Harrison already have tan lines.  Did I mention that it’s like ultimate fighting to tackle them and apply sunscreen?  I should really get that on video.

We were blessed to come across a huge load of wood; likely enough for all of next winter.  The men in my life took a couple of days to haul it to the back yard – boy did they have fun!

Quite soon, I’m afraid, I will have to rely solely on good behavior to keep Noah in the backyard.  He seems to have figured out yet another way to escape.

My garden was a bit of a bust.  We started baby plants from seed, watered them, gave them the best sun in the house, and slowly hardened them to the outside.  They didn’t survive.  My gardening just can’t compete with Milaeger’s.  I bought my veggie plants.  It’s come to mind that I did not inherit my mother’s green thumb.  I’d say it’s more yellow (as is the color of my dying baby plants)  There’s always next year….  We will have fresh home-grown veggies, even if the plants did get their start a few miles down the road.

I just adore this picture.  The boys were hanging out in the bathroom while I was getting ready, and Harrison ended up with a bit of a mohawk.

The kid, I’m adoring lately.  It would seem that we’ve turned a corner.  Harrison Tiger is now sleeping in his own bed for most of every night.  The other night he was hot screaming mess, refusing to go to bed.  I told him that I did not think I needed to be present for this temper tantrum.  I left the room, and that little Tiger put himself to bed and slept the whole night through.  It’s amazing how much more you like your children when they don’t wake you up 6-8 times a night…

He’s smart too.  He talks in sentences, can count to seven, knows his colors, and pretends to know letters like Noah.  He will correct you, if you call a bulldozer a front loader.

Harrison is all about doing it himself.  He climbs in his own carseat, puts on his own boots, pours his own juice.  If he cannot do it himself, he likes to direct which adult helps him with it.  Little bugger!

I’m so enjoying getting to know my little man.  He wants to be just like his big bro Noah, and the 2 play tremendously together.

Harrison Tiger, you are fierce.  But we love you something fierce, all your whims and wiles.

Last year I scored a patio set for $15.  I sewed new seat backs and seats, and finally got around to staining.  We found the bench on a family walk.  Rob added a few nails for stability, and I stained that too.  The fire pit was actually purchased, but it was the floor model, discounted.  Rob was responsible for that.

We tried out the new fire pit right away, and roasted hot dogs over open flame.

And what what would hot dogs be without a little baseball?  Noah’s been perfecting his swing and occasionally connects for a line drive.

Ha Ha, I locked you out!

Look at that sweet face.

101_3859

Can you imagine that sweet looking child screaming at 1:30 in the morning, and staying up to play and eat yougart for a couple of hours before falling back asleep somewhere past 3am?  Can you imagine him being somewhat cranky in the am, not wanting to get dressed, pelting his mom with frig magnets and screaming as a sleep-deprived mom tries to get 2 kids single-handedly out the door before work?  (Dad’s working 3am-11am, so we can feel bad for him too)

How about this sweet face?

101_3834

Can you imagine his immense displeasure at being told that he must go to daycare after an entire week of a family stay-cation, tons of outdoor fun and family adventures?  I can assure it was great.

But Rob’s son, is not going to let a little thing like Mom saying that he HAD to go to daycare ruin his morning.  Oh no!

I thought I was pretty smart bribing the kiddos with Curious George fruit snacks to get in their carseats.  Worked like a charm with the first sweet face.  He just about lept into his carseat.

Noah decided to head back inside.  I followed, but before I could reach the door I heard a click and a very sweet and deliberate, “Ha Ha, I locked you out!“

No way was I to be outsmarted by a 3.5 year old.  After all, I locked my own mother in the basement at the tender age of 2.5 years.  Hide-a-key was dug out, and Noah was carried kicking and screaming to the car.

As a post-though, I probably should have made him practice locking and un-locking the door 20 times as a creative punishment, but the situation did not present as a teachable moment.  I assure, we will be re-visiting NOT locking your mother out of the house in the near future.  But this morning, will, I’m certain be one of stories to tell for years to come.

So not Mexico…

My trip to La Manzanilla Mexico was sadly cancelled due to the swine flu.  I was way more down about it than I expected, but my sister and I have been planning and looking forward to it since Feb.

We took the fam to Key Lime Cove in Gurnee.  Not Mexico, but 86 degrees in the water park.

Good fun, but I’m sure we won’t do another hotel for awhile.  Maybe camping?

The boys and I framed out the garden with our paver’s bricks.  They were a big help carrying the bricks from garage to garden.

I’m so excited about my garden this year.  We started seeds a little to early, but we have beans, peas, tomatoes, basil, italien parsley, oregano, rosemary, and cilantro.  I’ll start some carrots in the ground, and maybe add zucchini or cukes too!  Best news of all: our raspberry plants survivedthe move in the fall and all 3 are sprouting new leaves.  Yummy!

I have too many plants, so we’re going to do some container gardening too.  I think that will be the boys responsibility, as I cannot allow those little fingers into my garden because they pick the food way too soon.  It will be fun for them to have their own cherry tomato and sweet pea plants to snack on.
